After his P.E. teacher (Jim Zubiena) sees him pin all his classmates in gym class, Kevin is drafted to the wrestling team by Coach Silva (James Tolkan), who's tough work ethic makes him think twice about trying out. Even though Wayne and Jack think he's not committed to be on the team, Kevin sticks with it when Chuck, Jeff, and Winnie encourage him by telling him they'll be at his first match. But when the coach tests him out against the smallest and lightest teammate, Spider (Kristopher Kent Hill), Kevin soon realizes this isn't gym class anymore and isn't as good as he thinks. Then the coach himself challenges Kevin and when he doesn't give up easily, he actually makes the team. Thinking he's just going to sit on the bench, Silva makes a change and Kevin has to wrestle the best in the 140 pound weight class on the Spartans team, Doug Gurney (Matt Blansett), who pinned everybody he's faced. During the match, Kevin quickly score two points, then it was all downhill from there. After Doug whispers in his ear "give up, and make it easy on yourself", he doesn't and his shoulder never touches the mat once, getting by on his natural ability from gym class. Even though he loses 15-2 in front of his friends and father, Kevin tells the coach "Told you I was good!", earning his respect.

After Ricky asks Kevin and the guys what's wrong with him and why can't he get a date to the dance, he finally finds a love interest with the new girl, Hayley Green (Renee Humphrey) and asks her to the spring dance. However, even though she is good-looking, the only flaw is her nose and Kevin, Jeff, and Chuck can't help but make fun of the size of it. In English class, their teacher Mr. Arkinson (David Brisbin) tells Hayley to read her paper on something that really bothers her about herself in front of the whole class. Thinking to hit her problem head on, she comically reads how her weakness is shopping because no matter how hard she tries, nothing really matches with her big nose and she's accepted it because she has personality and that's who she is. But her plan backfires and the class winds up laughing at her instead, leaving Ricky embarrassed to take her to the dance. So he backs out by lying about having to take his cousin to the hospital for an operation on her webbed feet. At the dance, Hayley actually shows up, and seeing a second chance to get her back, Kevin encourages Ricky to tell her the truth, but he doesn't. He asks her to dance, but she came with a date, class president and captain of the football team, Brett Davis (Eric Dane), who was so moved by her speech in class, he asked her out. Now Ricky is back to where he started, asking himself, "What does he have, that I don't?" Apparently, Hayley, the girl who simply knew herself and was happy with what she knew, unlike everyone else in school.

When Kevin and the guys get together for a Friday night of poker, each of them confesses their own problems. Chuck is worried about possibly becoming a father after not using protection with Alice; Randy failed his last three trigonometry tests, making him not graduate if he doesn't pass the class; and Jeff is accused of cheating at cards and annoys Paul with his cigar smoke. However, the real problem is with Paul's behavior by annoying everyone with his air freshener and prude remarks. His actions make the guys claim they have no room for Paul in the car or cabin for their spring break ski trip because they consider him a downer. After 17 years of Paul being his best friend, Kevin realizes they've grown apart. While out on a food run, they get into a fight and Paul actually says what Kevin wanted to say, that he's "changed". But just when tensions were growing between the guys, their problems vanish when Randy, always the loser, finally wins a hand. Then Alice calls to tell Chuck she's not pregnant, and Kevin and Paul see the error of their ways. While cleaning up, Kevin discovers Jeff's winning streak was still intact after all--he threw his last hand on purpose--though he questions why his friend had five kings.
